The window display at Ginza Maison Hermès in Tokio is a theatrical stage in the midst of the city. Each year, Hermès defines a theme, which is interpreted by renowned creators. In 2018, Stephan Hürlemann was invited to develop a concept for the annual motto «Let’s Play». The result of his work is on display from November 2018 until January 2019 in Tokio.

Stephan Hürlemann’s concept titled «Play Blocks» shows a fantastic world made of building bricks. The main display on the right features a nearly finished horse built from multicoloured building bricks. Will it fly away once the alate saddle in the left display touches it? The little Play Block Creatures work hard to make this dream come true. In the 16 small windows on the lateral front of the building, Play Blocks of different materials interact with Hermès products. Some Play Blocks are displayed during their transformation: the material has already assumed shape, only the form needs to evolve. The result are naked installations of surreal character.

«In Tokio, brands outdo themselves with perfectly orchestrated window displays. With my concept, I take a step back. The installations are arranged nakedly in white spaces, nothing is embellished. This way, they turn into statements, not into decoration, and we accomplish a unique characteristic», says Stephan Hürlemann.
