Standing Table

Roter Elefant, 2023

Pestalozzi Anwaltskanzlei, Switzerland

In 2023, Studio Hürlemann breathed new life into the former Alusuisse Building on Zurich’s Seefeldquai. The aim was to create a contemporary work environment for the new tenant, the law firm Pestalozzi, while preserving the identity of this symbolically important building.

Switzerland’s first steel-and-glass office building, designed in 1956 by architect Hans Hofmann, is characterised by its impressive atrium hall with clear spatial geometry and a monumental spiral staircase. A fountain and a large aluminium clock complete the architectural composition. Hofmann’s integration of Lake Zurich into the building is symbolised by the blue stoneware mosaic floor in the hall, while red carpet runners on the staircase and galleries add vivid accents of colour.

As part of the 2023 architectural renewal, architect and designer Stephan Hürlemann created a sculptural meeting point for the listed atrium. The standing table, named Roter Elefant, serves as a point of connection between the building and its new occupants. Its expressive design makes it an autonomous object within the space.

Hürlemann’s design draws inspiration from the motif of the floor tiles, transforming the tiles designed by Max Lamb for Tajimi Custom Tiles into a three-dimensional sculpture. Their vibrant red colour stands in striking contrast to the blue mosaic floor, establishing the colour dialogue that continues in the carpet runners throughout the building.

The table’s animal-like form inspired the name “Roter Elefant” (Red Elephant) — its rounded legs lending the piece an elegant sense of lightness despite its sculptural presence.
